What happens when we die? It is the oldest question in human experience, and for most of recorded history, it has been answered by religion and philosophy rather than science. Near Death Experiences (NDEs) have changed that — not by proving what lies beyond death, but by generating a body of reproducible, cross-cultural, empirically documented data about what human beings experience at the threshold of physical death, data that cannot be explained by the current materialist model of consciousness.
The term "Near Death Experience" was coined by Dr. Raymond Moody in his 1975 book Life After Life — a landmark work that collected and presented accounts from 150 people who had been clinically dead (by the medical definition of the time) and been resuscitated, or who had come within moments of death through injury, illness, or cardiac arrest. What Moody found was not a random collection of hallucinations, but a remarkably consistent set of experiences: the sensation of leaving the body and observing it from above, moving through a dark tunnel toward a brilliant light, being met by deceased relatives, encountering a being of light, experiencing a comprehensive life review, reaching a boundary or border, and then returning to the body — often reluctantly.
These elements have since been documented in thousands of accounts from every culture on Earth, from children too young to have been influenced by religious expectation, from congenitally blind people who describe visual experiences for the first time in their lives, and — most strikingly — from patients who report accurate, verifiable information about events that took place while they were clinically brain-dead.
It is this last category that makes NDEs scientifically extraordinary. If consciousness is simply a product of brain activity, it should cease when the brain ceases. But NDE accounts consistently report clear, structured consciousness during periods of clinical death — including verified veridical perceptions (things seen and heard while "dead" that are later confirmed by independent witnesses).
The most rigorous scientific study of NDEs was published in The Lancet in 2001 by Dutch cardiologist Dr. Pim van Lommel and colleagues. Over 13 years, they prospectively studied 344 cardiac arrest patients in ten Dutch hospitals. Of those who were resuscitated, 18% reported an NDE. Crucially, the depth of the NDE did not correlate with factors like medication, duration of unconsciousness, or psychological pre-disposition — but it did correlate with prior cardiac arrests and the depth of unconsciousness. Van Lommel concluded that consciousness is not produced by the brain but is non-local — associated with the brain but not generated by it.
Dr. Eben Alexander, a Harvard-trained neurosurgeon who had spent his career dismissing NDEs as brain artefacts, contracted bacterial meningitis in 2008 that essentially destroyed his cortex — the part of the brain considered responsible for consciousness. By every medical measure, he should have had no conscious experience. What he reported upon waking from a seven-day coma was a profound, layered journey through multiple realms of existence, communicating with an angelic being, and ultimately reaching a state of pure love and knowing. His book Proof of Heaven (2012) became an international bestseller and opened the NDE conversation to millions.
What makes the NDE particularly relevant to the X Alien Wire is the content of the experiences themselves — not just their consistency, but what they reveal about the nature of reality. NDErs routinely report access to what sounds exactly like the Akashic Record: a space of total knowing, where all past lives, all possible futures, and the entire fabric of history are instantly accessible. Many report encounters with beings who do not appear to be deceased humans — beings of light, teachers, entities who communicate in ways that transcend language. Some report being explicitly told information about the structure of the universe, the purpose of physical life, and the nature of consciousness — information that, when they return, they find independently corroborated across religious and philosophical traditions they had never studied.
NDEs do not prove extraterrestrial intelligence. But they do suggest, powerfully, that consciousness is non-local and non-physical — which has profound implications for everything else in this site. If consciousness survives death, it was never merely biological. If it was never merely biological, the idea that it exists in other forms, in other places, in other dimensions, becomes not just possible but expected.
Dr. Raymond Moody — Founding the Field
- Life After Life (1975): first systematic documentation of NDE accounts; 150 cases
- The fifteen core elements Moody identified as common across accounts
- Initial ridicule from the medical establishment; gradual acceptance as evidence accumulated
- Moody continued his research for 50 years; authored The Light Beyond, Reunions, Glimpses of Eternity
- His concept of the "life review" — a panoramic, instant replay of one's entire life, experienced from every perspective, including the perspectives of those one has affected
Dr. Pim van Lommel — The Lancet Study
- Consciousness Beyond Life (2010): the book-length version of his landmark research
- The prospective study: 344 cardiac arrest patients across 10 hospitals over 13 years
- 18% reported NDE; 12% had "deep" experiences including out-of-body perception
- The "Shoe on the Ledge" case: Maria (a Seattle cardiac arrest patient) described, while resuscitated, seeing a tennis shoe on an inaccessible ledge of the hospital — later verified
- Van Lommel's conclusion: consciousness is non-local; the brain is a receiver/transmitter, not a generator
- Parallels with quantum physics: non-local consciousness may relate to quantum entanglement
Dr. Eben Alexander — Proof from Inside the Brain
- A neurosurgeon who had spent his career explaining NDEs as brain artefacts
- Bacterial meningitis in 2008 destroyed his neocortex; spent 7 days in a coma
- His reported experience: a journey through "the Core" (a brilliant dark darkness filled with love), "the Gateway" (meadows, angelic music, a guide), and "the Core" itself (pure being, pure love, pure knowing)
- The guide: a woman on a butterfly wing who communicated three messages: "You are loved and cherished, dearly, forever"; "You have nothing to fear"; "There is nothing you can do wrong"
- Proof of Heaven (2012): international bestseller; unprecedented coming from within the neuroscience establishment
Dr. Sam Parnia — The AWARE Study
- Resuscitation specialist; studies consciousness during cardiac arrest
- AWARE Study (AWAreness during REsuscitation): placed visual targets on high shelves in cardiac resuscitation units, visible only from above — to test OBE claims
- AWARE II expanded the methodology; results published 2023 suggested some patients had genuine perceptions during cardiac arrest beyond what brain function could explain
- Erasing Death (2013) and What Happens When We Die (2006): accessible overviews
- Sam Parnia's clinical position: careful empiricist who takes the evidence seriously without overclaiming
Jeffrey Long MD — The NDE Research Foundation
- Largest database of NDE accounts in the world: nderf.org
- Over 5,000 accounts (and growing) collected and analysed systematically
- Evidence of the Afterlife (2010): presents nine lines of evidence for NDEs as genuine post-death experiences
- Lucidity during unconsciousness; encounters with deceased relatives not previously known to be dead; children's NDEs; worldwide cross-cultural consistency
- Long's conclusion: NDEs provide the strongest evidence for an afterlife yet assembled
Consistent Cross-Cultural Elements
- Out-of-body experience (OBE): awareness of leaving the physical body; observation of resuscitation from above
- The tunnel: movement through darkness toward light (not universal but common)
- The light/Being of Light: intensely loving, all-knowing presence of light; often described as God, Source, or the "Creator"
- Deceased relatives: meeting family members who have previously died; often appearing younger and in perfect health
- The life review: panoramic, instantaneous, third-person experience of one's entire life, including the emotional impact on others
- The border/boundary: a point of no return — a river, fence, wall, or threshold indicating the boundary between life and death
- The return: often unwilling; many NDErs describe not wanting to return to physical life
- Transformation: virtually all NDErs report profound, permanent personality transformation; increased compassion, decreased fear of death, spiritual awakening
NDE Accounts of Cosmic Information
- Many NDErs return with knowledge they had no prior access to — mathematical insights, medical knowledge, artistic ability
- Some return with explicit cosmic information: the structure of the afterlife, the nature of galactic civilisation, the purpose of reincarnation
- Mellen-Thomas Benedict (1982): reported a 90-minute NDE during which he was given an extraordinary cosmic download — including information about the "over-soul", galactic structure, and the role of Earth in the cosmic scheme
- Howard Storm: a militant atheist who had a terrifying negative NDE followed by a profound positive one; returned with information about Earth's future and humanity's potential
- The "life between lives" connection: NDEs and Michael Newton's hypnotic regression work (Journey of Souls) describe the same between-life landscape
The Blind NDE Cases
- Multiple accounts from congenitally blind individuals who describe visual experience for the first time during NDEs
- Vicki Umipeg: blind from birth; described seeing her own body and the hospital environment with clarity during her NDE; confirmed with specific details
- Documented extensively by Dr. Kenneth Ring and Sharon Cooper in Mindsight (1999)
- Implication: vision during NDEs is not a product of the visual cortex; it is a fundamental property of consciousness
- Dr. Raymond Moody (1944–) — Philosopher and physician; coined "NDE"; Life After Life (1975) is the foundational text; International Association for Near Death Studies (IANDS) co-founder
- Dr. Pim van Lommel — Dutch cardiologist; The Lancet study (2001); Consciousness Beyond Life (2010); argues consciousness is non-local
